League History
- The Utah Municipal League was established in 1907.
- The League's mission in 1907: Protect the interests of Utah's municipalities and promote an active interest in municipal affairs. The mission today: Pretty much the same thing.
- The League was one of the first 10 members of the National League of Cities.
- In 1937, the League reorganized, employed a full-time staff, expanded its legislative activity and launched training and other service programs.
- World War II ended just two weeks before the 1945 League convention, allowing hundreds of Utah officials to celebrate the end of the war (and travel restrictions) by heading to Richfield for the convention.
- The Utah Municipal League changed its name to the Utah League of Cities and Towns sometime in the 1970s (our records aren't clear about this one…)
- An astronaut (former Salt Lake City Mayor and U.S. Senator Jake Garn) is a past president of the League.
- The League represents all 243 cities and towns in the state of Utah.
- Senators Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett sponsored a resolution recognizing the League's 100 years of service to municipal government.
- In September, 2007, the League celebrated 100 years of effective leadership and service to Utah's cities and towns with their highest attended annual conference.
- At the League's annual conference Gordon B. Hinckley was presented with the Municipal Citizen of the Century award for his inspiration to all of Utah. Other guest speakers at the conference included David McCullough and Michael Beschloss.
